Audiovisual performance

"No Longer A Tree"

No Longer A Tree, the audiovisual performance created by Iván Puñal, is a profound exploration of the relationship between humanity and nature in a world shaped by the Anthropocene. This show immerses the audience in a visual and auditory experience that reinterprets the natural landscape within the context of a planet drastically altered by human activity. It questions how the natural world, as we know it, is transformed and loses its original essence at the hands of unchecked progress and consumption.

Iván Puñal uses technology to bring a digital forest to life, where trees, rivers, and mountains are transformed into computer-generated models. In this synthetic world, nature loses its authenticity, becoming an artificial “second nature” devoid of life—a symbol of how humanity replaces and reshapes the organic with the artificial. Inspired by the laws of thermodynamics, particularly the concept of entropy, Puñal illustrates how constant growth and unchecked accumulation lead to disorder and ultimately, to the collapse of ecosystems.

The show combines striking visuals with an enveloping soundtrack, transporting the viewer to a dystopian setting where natural balance has been replaced by abstract simulations. Through this digital environment, No Longer A Tree reflects on the ecological impact and the consequences of our footprint on a closed system like planet Earth. It serves as a call to question where our current way of life is leading us, inviting us to look beyond the surface and recognize the interconnections between our actions and the future of the planet.

This performance, in its fusion of art and science, offers a provocative view of the future of our ecosystems and presents a direct critique of our perception of nature in a world increasingly dominated by the artificial.
